d e a t h

hamlet's father has died
his mother has married his uncle claudius

t h e    g h o s t

the ghost of hamlet's father tells hamlet the truth
he was murdered by claudius
he calls upon hamlet to kill claudius for revenge

m a d n e s s

hamlet realises that to protect himself
he must hide his mission
he decides to act mad with everyone he meets
so they will never know what he is truly thinking

l o v e

ofelia returns hamlet's gifts
this enrages him
he accuses her of lying to him & being dishonest
he realises that her father polonius is watching
& their meeting is a trap

m y    l o r d

polonius now tries to discover the secret
of hamlet's madness
but hamlet reveals nothing
& acts even madder to fool them all

f r i e n d s

hamlet's friends from university
rosincrance & guildensterne visit hamlet
but Hamlet quickly realises they were sent by claudius
so he becomes even madder

t h e    p l a y

hamlet asks some players to show a play to claudius
with the same story of how claudius killed his father
he fears that the ghost is a devil
& wants definite proof
when claudius watches the play
at the moment when the king is killed with poison
as claudius killed his father
claudius ends the play
hamlet is now convinced that claudius is guilty

m o t h e r

hamlet accuses his mother of betraying his father
afraid that hamlet will kill her she screams for help
in the struggle hamlet accidentally kills polonius
arriving to help gertrude
hamlet must hide the body

t he    k i n g

hamlet finds claudius praying
he could kill him now to end his revenge
but if he does then claudius will go to heaven
he lets him live & claudius sends hamlet to england

e n g l a n d

the ship for england is attacked by pirates
who capture hamlet
he arranges with them to return him to denmark

d e a t h

back in denmark he learns that ofelia is dead
claudius & ofelia's brother laertes challenge hamlet to a duel
hamlet accepts
